During the funeral, a crow landed on the girl’s coffin. A second later, everyone present was STRUCK SPEECHLESS…
“Get out of here!” Brian said, his voice cold and resolute. “You don’t belong here. You have no right.”
When Brian returned, he hugged Emily. “We’ll get through this, I promise,” he whispered, but the words felt too weak to comfort. They both knew nothing could turn back time.
Nothing could bring back their little Sophia. At home, Emily could barely stand. Her world felt meaningless.
Every minute was torture, memories of Sophia haunting her. Her phone rang suddenly. With trembling hands, she answered.
“Hello?” Her voice was lifeless. “This is the detective,” a man said. “We’ve arrested Claire Bennett.”
Emily’s heart stopped. She couldn’t process what it meant. “Claire?” Her voice was barely audible, as if seeking something to ground her.
“Yes, we found enough evidence of her guilt. Claire’s been arrested. We’re preparing for trial.
I thought you should know.” A week later, the trial concluded with Claire sentenced to seven years in prison.
It was a small punishment for someone who took their most precious treasure. As Claire was led from the courtroom in handcuffs, she glared at Emily with contempt, her anger and hatred palpable. “This is for ruining my family and trying to take what’s mine!” she spat with such fury it felt almost tangible.
“Burn in hell, you wretch!” Emily’s heart froze. Claire’s words left a deep scar in her soul. Brian hugged her, trying to offer comfort, but it didn’t matter.
The pain was too vast to be soothed by words. Life went on, but Emily was never the same. Everything had changed.
Even with justice served, a gaping wound remained in her soul, one nothing could heal.
