“Daddy, don’t leave me with the new mom, she does bad things.” Hiding in the closet, the father FROZE at what he saw
Her eyes, so much like her mother’s, were filled with fear and confusion. “It’s about Rachel, Dad.” Michael felt his heart tighten.
“What do you mean, honey?” Sophia bit her lip again, struggling to find the words. “She’s hurting me.” Michael’s world froze for a moment.
“How, sweetheart? How is she hurting you?” Tears began rolling down Sophia’s cheeks. “When you’re not home, she gets mad at me, yells scary things, pushes me, or grabs my arm really hard.” Michael was stunned.

How could he have missed what was happening to his little girl? “Why didn’t you tell me sooner, Sophia?” She shrugged, clearly uncomfortable. “I was scared. Rachel said if I told you, you’d get mad and send me to a foster home. She said no one would believe me because I’m just a silly kid and she’s an adult.” Michael’s heart broke. “Sweetheart, I’d never send you anywhere. You’re the most important person in my life, and I’ll always believe you and protect you.” Sophia nodded slowly, but Michael could see doubt lingering in her eyes. “You promise you won’t be mad at me?” — “I promise, honey. This isn’t your fault.” Michael kissed her forehead and hugged her again. A moment later, he stood up…
