A girl in a wheelchair entered the shelter in Chicago. She whispered: «I want to see the one who’s the most afraid.» The staff exchanged glances. It was cage number eleven.
In it sat Max. A huge German Shepherd they called a «lost cause.» He lunged at the bars, growled, and wouldn’t let anyone near.
But the girl wasn’t scared. She slowly wheeled up to the cage and started talking. And what happened in the next few minutes forever changed the lives of everyone around.
No one approached cage number eleven. Even experienced volunteers kept their distance. Max, a massive male with a wounded soul, reacted the same to everyone.
Bared teeth, growling, tense muscles. As if his existence was built on fear and pain. He ended up in the shelter after being found in the basement of an abandoned house.
A collar embedded in his neck. Old scars on his body. Since then, he wouldn’t let anyone close.
But today was different. The girl’s name was Sophia. Her mom brought her.
A quiet woman with a tired face. Sophia couldn’t walk. After the accident, her legs stopped working.
But her eyes were full of strength. They glowed with confidence. She wheeled past cages where dogs reached out to her hopefully.
But her gaze was fixed on the end of the hall, where in the dim light, Max breathed heavily. «I want to talk to him,» she whispered. «Him?» «Dangerous,» exhaled one of the workers.
«He doesn’t trust anyone,» but Sophia nodded. I didn’t trust anyone before either. And then her mom, trembling with fear, slowly pushed her daughter toward the scariest cage in the shelter.
When Sophia got close to the cage, Max stood up. He rose sharply, like a storm, huge, black and tan, all tense. Muscles trembled under his fur…
